An NAACP flyer campaigning for the Dyer Anti-Lynching Bill, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives in 1922, but was filibustered to defeat in the Senate. Dyer, the NAACP, and freedom fighters around the country, like Flossie Baily, struggled for years to get the Dyer and other anti-lynching bills passed, to no avail. Today there is still no U.S. law specifically against lynching. In 2005, eighty of the 100 U.S. Senators voted for a resolution to apologize to victims' families and the country for their failure to outlaw lynching. Community members in Senatobia said they are heartbroken and searching for answers after an officer-involved shooting on Sunday, June 14, outside an area Walmart resulted in the death of a child.

As the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) continues its investigation, residents are sharing their feelings about the incident and the questions they still have.

“It’s sad. I feel bad for the mom, and if the cop has any inkling of care in the world, he’s gonna be haunted by this — he really is,” said one Senatobia resident who asked to remain anonymous. “He’s gonna be haunted by this, and I feel for everybody involved.”

“It had a very big impact, and everybody’s talking about it,” Senatobia resident Isaiah Reece said.

While the investigation continues, questions remain about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
