An NAACP flyer campaigning for the Dyer Anti-Lynching Bill, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives in 1922, but was filibustered to defeat in the Senate. Dyer, the NAACP, and freedom fighters around the country, like Flossie Baily, struggled for years to get the Dyer and other anti-lynching bills passed, to no avail. Today there is still no U.S. law specifically against lynching. In 2005, eighty of the 100 U.S. Senators voted for a resolution to apologize to victims' families and the country for their failure to outlaw lynching. The observance comes as new data from the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) shows Black women working full-time, year-round earned 65 cents for every dollar earned by white, non-Hispanic men in 2024. While that figure is down from 67 cents during the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers say the earlier improvement reflected disruptions in the labor market rather than lasting progress toward pay equity.

he pay gap is driven by more than unequal wages for the same job. According to the NWLC and The Century Foundation, Black women are more likely to work in lower-paying occupations because of occupational segregation, workplace discrimination and a disproportionate share of caregiving responsibilities. Those factors can limit earnings over a lifetime while widening racial wealth gaps.
