MKE Black Theatre Festival 2026

The MKE Black Theatre Festival returns to venues across Milwaukee for a multi-week celebration of Black storytelling, performance, and creative expression. Produced by Black Arts MKE, the festival brings together playwrights, performers, artists, and community members to experience the power of theater and the arts.

The 2026 festival features live performances, spoken word experiences, play development opportunities, and professional workshops designed to support both emerging and established artists. Highlights include the world premiere of Vel & Groppi: In the Deep Tracks, a theatrical exploration of the historic partnership between civil rights leader Vel Phillips and Father James Groppi.

Additional programming includes youth and family events, spoken word performances, community conversations, audition masterclasses, headshot workshops, monologue showcases, and opportunities for artists to develop their craft. Through these experiences, the festival creates space for connection, reflection, and the continued growth of Black theater in Milwaukee.

Events take place at multiple venues throughout the city, including the Marcus Performing Arts Center, Black Arts MKE’s home venue, and other community spaces.
