Joshua Glover Day
On March 11, 1854, Joshua Glover was broken out of Milwaukee’s jail by a large crowd in resistance to the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. The rescue of Joshua Glover drew the City of Milwaukee into a national debate over slavery, race, and the rights of African Americans both enslaved and free.
Join us on your lunch break this March 11th as we commemorate Joshua Glover Day in partnership with the Milton House, Wisconsin’s only certified Underground Railroad site that is open for tours.
Milton House educators will present on the Underground Railroad in Wisconsin at 12 PM and then ABHM Griots will guide those interested through our galleries, adding national context to the struggle for freedom and highlighting the significance of Joshua Glover’s escape.
Pre-registration is not required and this experience is included with regular admission.
