SUMMARY:ABHM Book Club: Malcolm Lives by Ibram X Kendi
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce a very special edition of the ABHM Book Club! For July, we will be reading Dr. Ibram X Kendi’s new book for middle schoolers, Malcolm Lives! in partnership with We Got This and the museum’s Jr Griots (our high school summer docents). There are three places you can go to discuss Malcolm Lives! with us on July 24th at 4 PM: inside at ABHM, outside at We Got This Community Garden, or virtually via Zoom.\nWe were fortunate to host Dr. Kendi at the museum back in May in partnership with Niche Book Bar and Boswell Books. We learned from the author firsthand about why young readers need to access to this history. We are looking forward to a lively discussion about this important new work from Dr. Kendi. Please consider purchasing copies from both @nichebookbarllc and @boswellbookcom!\nAbout the Author\nDR. IBRAM X. KENDI is a National Book Award-winning author of sixteen books for adults and children, including ten New York Times bestsellers—five of which were #1 New York Times bestsellers. Dr. Kendi is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Boston University, and the director of the BU Center for Antiracist Research. He is a contributing writer at The Atlantic and a CBS News racial justice contributor. In the summer of 2025, he will join Howard University as Professor of History and Director of its newly established Howard Institute for Advanced Study.\nAbout the Book\nDr. Ibram X. Kendi brings an American icon to life in the first major biography of Malcolm X for young people in more than thirty years.\nAs a youth, Malcolm endured violence, loss, hunger, foster care, racism, and being incarcerated. He emerged from it all to make a lasting global impact. As a Muslim. As a family man. As a revolutionary. Malcolm’s life story shows the promise of every human being. Of you!\nTo trace Malcolm’s childhood and adult years, Kendi draws on Malcolm’s stirring oratory style, using repetition and rhetoric. Short, swift chapters echo Malcolm’s trademark fast walk. An abundance of never-before published letters, notes, flyers, photos, extensive source notes, and more give young readers a front-row seat to his life.\nOne hundred years after his birth in 1925, Malcolm’s antiracist legacy lives on in this thoughtful and accessible must-read for all Americans. For you!\nJust like history, Malcolm lives.\nPlease register at tinyurl.com/malcolmlives and, when you register, please indicate at which place you will attend.\n
