DESCRIPTION:Rid Racism Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Turners invite you to an in-person or online free film screening of “Origin.” \nOrigin is a 2023 biographical drama film directed by Ava DuVernay, centered on Isabel Wilkerson, portrayed by Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor. The film chronicles Wilkerson’s journey as she writes Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, exploring caste systems in Germany, India, and the U.S.\nThe plot follows Wilkerson as she grapples with personal tragedies, including the loss of her husband, mother, and cousin. After the killing of Trayvon Martin, she investigates how bigotry extends beyond race, examining the caste system in India and its parallels to racism in America and Nazi Germany. Through conversations with friends and acquaintances, she articulates her insights into the intersections of race and caste.\nWilkerson’s research leads her to discover that the Nazis adopted elements of American Jim Crow laws. Interspersed are narratives of couples in Nazi Germany and Black researchers studying segregation in America. Ultimately, Wilkerson’s work culminates in her bestselling book, Caste, which she presents on stage, advocating for a deeper understanding of bigotry. The book became a New York Times bestseller around the 2020 election.\nThe event is being held on Saturday, November 2nd from Noon to 3:30 p.m. There will be a talkback panel discussion after the film.
