DESCRIPTION:We will be reading Half American by Matthew F. Delmont, and discussing it virtually on November 14th at 6 PM via Zoom.\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE\nWorld War II is often seen as a clash between democratic and fascist nations, yet nearly 10% of residents in the world’s largest democracy faced racial discrimination during the 1940s. In Half American: The Epic Story of African Americans Fighting World War II at Home and Abroad, historian Matthew F. Delmont explores how Black Americans fought against racism both abroad and at home.\nAware of the segregation limiting their citizenship, African Americans adopted a “Double Victory” strategy, aiming to defeat foreign fascism while challenging domestic oppression. Delmont recounts this struggle, highlighting Langston Hughes’ coverage of the Spanish Civil War and the mistreatment of returning Black veterans. This history is essential for understanding and transforming our current society.\nThe book also sheds light on the contributions of less-known groups like the Black Panthers and the Montford Point Marines, who bravely served in critical battles. Beyond military achievements, Half American illuminates the significant roles of African American civilians during the war.\nBy utilizing official records, oral histories, and the Black press, Delmont amplifies the voices of prominent leaders and everyday individuals, ensuring their vital contributions to history are acknowledged and celebrated.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout ABHM Book Club:\nAmerica’s Black Holocaust Museum’s founder, Dr. James Cameron, was an avid reader and inspiring writer and educator. To this day, he is the only known survivor of a lynching to write and publish a memoir about such an experience. We have created this book club program in his honor.
